Interview With A Wrinkle In Time Star Deric McCabe

Can you believe it’s been just a few weeks since the Han Solo Press Event? I am still in awe of everything that happened and I’ve been striving to bring you into each experience through my words and pictures.

But there’s one very special experience that I cannot put into words. I had the unique opportunity to interview Deric McCabe, the nine-year-old boy who plays Charles Wallace Murry in A Wrinkle In Time.

A Wrinkle In Time Charles Wallace Murry Deric McCabe

Deric McCabe is the first Filipino actor to star in a major studio motion picture in Hollywood, and, you can quote me on this, the cutest boy alive! His energy and presence explain why he was chosen out of thousands of boy actors who auditioned for the part of “young intelligent boy” in a period of seven months.

It’s really meaningful to me to see Filipino representation on the big screen because some of my ancestors were from the Philippines. It’s great to know that Deric McCabe is proud to be Filipino, too!

Director Ava Duvernay insisted on making A Wrinkle In Time a diverse movie, and this diversity reflected on the cast.

“This is a story about belonging,” says DuVernay. “It’s about Meg feeling like she belongs in the universe and has a mighty part to play… as do we all.”

Disney’s “A Wrinkle in Time,” is an epic adventure based on Madeleine L’Engle’s timeless classic which takes audiences across dimensions of time and space, examining the nature of darkness versus light and, ultimately, the triumph of love. It’s a story that is filled with positive messages for the whole family but especially to those who feel like they are not enough or not comfortable in their own skin.

Mindy Kaling is Mrs. Who, Levi Miller is Calvin O’Keefe, Oprah Winfrey is Mrs. Which, Zach Galifianakis is the Happy Medium, Storm Reid is Meg Murry, Deric McCabe is Charles Wallace Murry and Reese Witherspoon is Mrs. Whatsit in Disney’s A WRINKLE IN TIME.

Deric McCabe told us he was so excited to have his first big role and he told us how he wants to be an Avenger, which is how he became obsessed with wanting to become an actor.

I was watching the Avengers with my dad and I just saw Scarlett Johansson… and I was like oh, I want to do that. And I was like, and I’m going to meet her. So, then I was like, I think I want to do acting. So, they put me into acting and now here I am talking to all you mommy bloggers.

He said he was a bit nervous during the auditions, and the callbacks were a long process, so I asked him what helped him get through that.

My parents. They did because they were like, don’t worry. They may call you back. They’re going to call you back.

He got the call. Emmy® winner and Oscar® and Golden Globe® nominee Ava DuVernay called him and asked Deric McCabe if he wanted to work with her. BEST – CALL – EVER!

More than 50 years after Madeleine L’Engle’s young adult novel “A Wrinkle in Time” was awarded the prestigious Newbery Medal, the big-screen retelling of this timeless classic takes audiences on a transformative journey, exquisitely illustrated through jaw-dropping visual effects, a stirring musical score, and diverse, star-studded cast. Three celestial guides, Mrs. Which (two-time Academy Award® nominee Oprah Winfrey), Mrs. Whatsit (Oscar®, Golden Globe® and Emmy® winner Reese Witherspoon) and Mrs. Who (Emmy nominee Mindy Kaling), come to Earth to share their wisdom and love with struggling eighth-grader Meg Murry (Storm Reid) as she journeys across dimensions with classmate Calvin (Levi Miller) and younger brother Charles Wallace (Deric McCabe) in search of her father (Chris Pine), a world-renowned physicist who mysteriously disappeared four years ago.

And almost a year after I saw the cast and crew at D23 Expo, Disney’s A Wrinkle In Time comes home, finally available in 4K Ultra HD (4K UHD+Blu-ray+Digital Copy), Multi-Screen Edition (Blu-ray+DVD+Digital Copy), DVD, Digital 4K UHD/HD/SD, Movies Anywhere, and On-Demand, rated PG in U.S., with a run time of approximately 115 minutes.

D23 EXPO 2017 - Saturday, July 15, 2017 - The Ultimate Disney Fan Event - brings together all the worlds of Disney under one roof for three packed days of presentations, pavilions, experiences, concerts, sneak peeks, shopping, and more. The event, which takes place July 14-16 at the Anaheim Convention Center, provides fans with unprecedented access to Disney films, television, games, theme parks, and celebrities. Disney’s “A Wrinkle In Time,” is a heartfelt, inspirational story, and a timeless classic and I love that audio is available in English, French, and Spanish, with subtitles in English SDH, Spanish and French. Eliana and I watched it in Spanish this morning and I found myself crying even more than when we saw it in theaters in English.

We were generously gifted tickets to go as a family during the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration, along with a copy of the book A Wrinkle In Time – A Guide To The Universe. Reading the book together and watching the movie were very emotional experiences for all of us. Charles Wallace was always my favorite.

Alex and Ani - Wrinkle in Time Collection

I love Meg’s story of transformation and the idea of being ushered by three celestial guides in a journey to embrace her individuality. I often proudly wear my ALEX AND ANI jewelry to remind myself that I am a warrior of light.

And Deric McCabe, oh what a luminous being he is. I’ve never had a funner interview. Here are some of the fun facts I learned about him while at Walt Disney Studios last month:

His favorite filming location was New Zealand.

Reese Witherspoon hugged him every day on set.

He goes to regular school and his favorite classes are “lunch” and “recess”

He was never frustrated during the film.

He was always confident.

“That’s what I do.”

If someone tells him “You have an amazing personality,” he’ll reply:

“Oh, I know, right.”

He hasn’t seen Storm since the A Wrinkle In Time premiere.

His friends saw the movie and asked a lot of questions.

And I told them everything.

He has a baby brother who is 2 and a big sister who is 12.

His acting heroes are Scarlett Johansson and Chloe Bennett.

“ They are delightful. I haven’t met them. They are hot and they love me even though they don’t know me.”

He has no upcoming projects at the moment but plans to keep acting.

The hardest scene for him to film was a crying scene.

How he made himself cry:

Thinking of my baby brother that was hurt, injured.

He had an acting coach on set with him every day:

“John, I love you.”

In his spare time, he likes to eat and do cartwheels. He demonstrated it for us!

He wants to be an Avenger, a superhero – a new one, not one that’s already been done.

His favorite memory from filming was “the hallway scene”

“The stuntmen were pulling them and they couldn’t see because they couldn’t be in the shot so I stopped and they kept going and I fell on top of all three of them.”

He’s done a few mandatory holiday school shows but he doesn’t feel they helped him in acting.

“It wasn’t really a show!”

His favorite scene in the movie is when Mrs. Whats It transforms into a flying cabbage leaf dragon.

We actually got to be in a robot arm. It’s just this arm colored blue and just juggles me. And then Levi got to do flips and Storm was in a harness. So that was cool.

He loved talking to Mindy Kahling that went beyond quotes:

“We had some very good conversations.”

His favorite memory of Oprah was her eating his popcorn. But she also gave him some insight for his career:

She did say, there’s more to come after the movie. And I’m there sobbing on the floor. No, there’s not. My life is over.

But even with that, his advice for kids who want to get into acting is:

When you don’t get any jobs, keep the faith.

He gets his positivity from his dad (you know I had to ask!)

Charles Wallace was always my favorite, but even more now that I know Deric McCabe. You’ll learn lots more about him behind the scenes and get a glimpse of his funny, sassy, and sweet demeanor.

Sitting across from him was like having a vision of what Eliana will be like in a few years: wise, bubbly, and

There’s so much we can learn from him! Enjoy!
