I have so many fond (and funny) memories of Lent and Easter in the Dominican Republic. My grandma was so devout and she inspired us to have reverence for this celebrated and cherished holidays in Catholic life.
When I was growing up everyone would have reverence for this this time of new life and transformation. “Semana Santa” (Holy Week) was a time where you wouldn’t hear loud music anywhere and every establishment was closed since Wednesday noon to observe the solemn days in which we commemorated Jesus Christ and His sacrifice.
When I moved to the United States, I was in shock to see how different the celebrations are. I had never heard of the Easter bunny or Easter eggs, and we never had an Easter dinner before, either.
I learned that some people have an egg hunt, an egg toss, or make special recipes as they gather with their loved ones, and I didn’t quite understand what these traditions meant and how they were related to the resurrection.
This video by Catholic Central explains it quite well and I’m excited to share it with you!
Even with the culture shock, I have many fond Easter memories. In 2003, I had Easter dinner with the sweetest family ever.
I met Barbara at a community college class I was taking in Fallbrook, California. I was pregnant with Elyssa and Elisha was really small (they’re one year and 7 days apart). When their father was deployed, Barbara sent him a care package in Iraq and invited us to come over to her home because she knew I was on my own… and lonely.
It was the first time I felt the spirit of the season because I felt so loved and cared for and her Christlike behavior helped me realize that these traditions can be made more spiritually meaningful.
My friends at Catholic Central not only create shareable, snackable videos that teach the timeless truths and deep history of the Church with humor and heart, they also sent me a downloadable PDF to share with you with some fun ways to celebrate Easter as a Christian. My daughters and I have a tradition of celebrating the First Day of Spring with a picnic, so this is perfect for our family.
And speaking of Spring, I learned so much about how LENT is related to Spring and all the symbolism behind it, so I want to share this Catholic Central video with you:
I’ve realized that even though our traditions and ways to worship and celebrate may be different, we all share a beautiful purpose. So exciting!
Easter is about HOPE, SECOND CHANCES, and keeping an ETERNAL PERSPECTIVE. It’s the time to celebrate those we will see, hold, and enjoy again because of the Resurrection of Christ. REJOICE!
