Rumi is one of the most popular poets of all time. I am a big Rumi fan and I’ve shared other Rumi quotes before, but today I want to focus on Rumi quotes about LOVE.
This real beloved Persian poet wrote some of the most inspirational quotes about the transformative power of love. Even when we suspect they are infinitely more beautiful in his own language and we are merely getting a poor translation of Rumi’s work, there’s so much to learn about unconditional love and inner peace in Rumi’s words. His love poems depict not only what true love is, but also how to live life and how to make the best of the human experience.
These Rumi love quotes will help your soul heal because Rumi’s poetry aligns with the laws that govern the entire universe.
Whether we want to share them with others as an expression of love for them, or simply savor them ourselves so we can grasp a glimpse of our dear soul, Rumi’s quotes will take us on the road of love, walking what it truly means to love ourselves and others.
Every day is a day to love, treasure, and cherish ourselves, those around us, and everything around us. And these Rumi quotes have really helped me have a deeper understanding of what it means to love with our whole heart and to love the whole world.
Get ready to embrace the beauty of the heart and the brilliant light within you and to convert to the religion of love with your favorite Rumi quote below.
Rumi Quotes About Love
I learned so much from these Rumi quotes, and I’ll share my thoughts on each, but I do want you to ponder, analyze, and reflect on them, so you can come to your own conclusions.
These Rumi quotes are so deep that they have the power to shift and shape our perspective, and therefore change our lives.
So let’s get started!
“Only from the heart can you touch the sky.” ~ Rumi
You know how they say “the sky’s the limit”?
I believe Rumi is saying here that you can only live up to your potential when you live from the heart. What “living from the heart” means to me is to strive to make love the center of everything we do.
We live in a world where we are making decisions from logic (what makes sense) or from fear (looking at what others are doing or wondering what others would think, say, or do). When we consult our hearts before making every decision, we can really soar in any area of our lives.
One question that can get us started dropping into our hearts is “What would I love?” As you ask this question, you will choose love and you will fly.
“Wherever you are, and whatever you do, be in love.” ~ Rumi
Deciding to be in a state of love wherever and whenever and whatever we do can be so hard when someone or something annoys, frustrates, and bothers us.
And yet, there is always something to learn from that person or situation, which can be such a blessing that it is difficult to not love the teacher.
Being in love is not to be confused with falling in love. Falling in love is something that happens because you are attracted to something and you like it intensely. Being in love is a state where you have agency.
In the same sense, being in love is not the same as showing love. Being is deeper than doing because you are making this your essence and your nature, and that is not a moment but a journey.
To take the first step, ask yourself “What can I love here?” There is something to love whenever we are and there is something to love about what we are doing. Even the smallest find can elevate our vibration and our being.
“Your heart knows the way. Run in that direction.” ~ Rumi
They say “Follow your heart, but take your head with you.” That’s sage advice, and yet, when you’ve been through trauma, abuse, or gaslighting, it is hard to trust your heart, to trust yourself and your intuition.
It takes courage to follow your passions and even to admit or acknowledge that you are even allowed to have passions, goals, and dreams.
I am learning to run in the direction of my dreams when I can, and embracing the times when all I can do is take a tiny step toward them. I invite you to do the same.
Ask your heart right now: What is one tiny step I can take in the direction of my dreams?
Maybe you don’t have dreams, plural. Maybe you can’t even find one dream. Here’s an easy one: You can dream of great health. This is something we all want, no matter how old, and that will generate the energy of love toward your physical body. That’s not just a good start, it’s a big start.
So ask your heart that question again and take that tiny step. It will lead to a beautiful journey and soon you’ll be running and taking giant leaps toward loving yourself and others.
“Love is the bridge between you and everything.” ~ Rumi
Perphaps you’ve heard of the Law of Attraction (LOA). The Law of Attraction is the universal law that tells us that like attracts like.
If we think about this, when we’re in a state of love, we attract what we love, what we desire. Raising to the frequency of love is really going toward what we want. So what this means is that love is the bridge between you and and everything that will bring you joy, peace, prosperity, fulfillment, and anything else your soul craves.
And when we think about the analogy of a bridge, we can also interpret that Rumi wanted us to visualize that when we allow love to be our guide, we can really navigate life in an easier way and actually enjoy the journey. Isn’t that what we want, too? I know I do!
“Whatever lifts the corners of your mouth, trust that.” ~ Rumi
This Rumi quote gave me the freedom to understand that love is not chaotic or anxiety-inducing, it is a state of peace that makes your heart smile.
When you’ve been through trauma, feeling safe and happy does not feel familiar. We don’t trust it because we’re “waiting for the other shoe to drop.” But as we align with our heart and the love we can find there, we can trust joy to be our compass.
If you can sense that something or someone is stressing you out, it may be a sign you must carefully study.
Yes, we can learn from people who push our buttons and trigger us; however, you are allowed to seek that and those who put a smile on your face. In fact, it is part of your mission and your destiny.
“If I love myself, I love you. If I love you, I love myself.” ~ Rumi
Self-love is the foundation of all love because we radiate love from the inside and pour it out onto others.
It’s a cycle – and as we love ourselves, we have the ability to love others, and the kinder, more patient, and more compassionate we are to others, the more we fall in love with ourselves.
This is an essential teaching because we are all connected as one. Love generates goodness and there is no private good.
In the same sense, when your heart is infected with resentment, you are not able to love yourself, and when your heart is infected with self-judgments, you are unable to truly love others.
“Close your eyes, fall in love, stay there.” ~ Rumi
Well, they say that love is blind, so it makes complete sense that closing our eyes is a step to falling in love.
Jokes aside, what came to my heart as I read this Rumi quote was really how I overlooked many faults and frustrating traits from people when I was under the attraction spell – whether romantic or not.
I closed my eyes, and fell in love, but didn’t stay there. I opened my eyes and I saw them as less than the lovely people I had seen in the beginning.
I’m not suggesting that I should go back to those relationships or friendships, but what I am saying is that I do love them and see their loveliness again because I am feeling with my heart, rather than focusing on what I see with my eyes.
This is something that I am striving to do, and as I forgive others, I am truly able to forgive myself whenever I violate my own values and standards. It is a path I love walking, though it can be tiring and hard, because I know I’m on the right track and I can get back whenever I get lost.
“Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.” ~ Rumi
Love is our core, our nature, our essence, our origin, and our destiny.
Love is inevitable.
Sometimes choosing love takes effort, because fear has built walls that keep love dormant, but as we take them down, we are free to be love again.
According to Philip-Beck’s comment, this quote is misattributed to Rumi. He claims that it actually came from A Course in Miracles (ACIM) in Chapter 16, Section 4, paragraph 6. It states:
“Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all of the barriers within yourself that you have built against it. It is not necessary to seek for what is true, but it is necessary to seek for what is false. Every illusion is one of fear, whatever form it takes. And the attempt to escape from one illusion into another must fail. If you seek love outside yourself you can be certain that you perceive hatred within, and are afraid of it. Yet peace will never come from the illusion of love, but only from its reality.”
As we look within, without the barriers we created with the bricks that were thrown at us, we can find the reality of love and enjoy its bliss.
“Let your teacher be love itself.” ~ Rumi
As children, learn from our parents, our school teachers, and our activity leaders, but what if we actually grew up believing that love could be our teacher?
Because of this Rumi quote, I’m going to start asking myself this question: “If love were my teacher right now, what would it say I could do?”
I invite you to reflect upon this as well.
What does love have to teach me today? What can I learn? How can I implement those teachings?
I think that’d be powerful!
“Laugh as much as you breathe. Love as long as you live.” ~ Rumi
Laughter is medicine and love heals. Laughter is one of those cures that we underestimate and underuse.
Tuning into laughter has helped me survive some really hard days when the last thing I wanted to do was laugh – or breathe.
Write down a list of things that make you laugh.
We live in a world where the only goals we set are those that push us, so today, I encourage you to set a goal to be intentional in being around whatever it is that causes you to laugh out loud, with all your might.
“Let the beauty we love be what we do.” ~ Rumi
This Rumi quote had me wondering: “What do I find beautiful?”
And then I would BE that!!!
Be like a baby, be like nature…
Seek that which you love and decide and resolve that you will do that, that you will be that.
What would you be and do?
The answers will come from a place that requires a deep connection. It’s wise to unplug for a few minutes, close your eyes, and remain in stillness and solitude until you hear them clearly. You are a powerful creator and your creations can be beautiful as you sit in the beauty of what you do.
“Let yourself be silently drawn by the stronger pull of what you really love.” ~ Rumi
This one feels so wonderful because it gives us permission to just go with what we love. Rumi is saying this happens in silence. There’s no need to announce it to the world. There’s no need to ask permission of anyone else. You just let your soul take you where it knows it is safe, blissful, and healing… Where it feels home.
What is one thing you love that you will let pull you today?
Nothing is too big or too small. Surrender to whatever came to mind as you read that question. It will start a love revolution within you that will change everything for you.
“Be soulful. Be kind. Be in love.” ~ Rumi
Soulful means “expressive of deep feeling or emotion.” I really love this word because it really captures the human condition. And yet, we suppress and bypass these feelings and emotions so frequently.
We have been fed the lie that we need to seem happy, grateful, and positive all the time. We apologize for feeling and for expressing those feelings.
I’m sorry for crying.
I apologize for getting so emotional.
I hate to be negative…
These phrases block love because love sees pain.
When we are soulful, then we can truly be kind, and we can embody love.
LOVE is a force that exists in each of us and that needs to be expressed and our kindness is the best vehicle for that – kindness to ourselves and to others.
“Love sometimes wants to do us a great favor: hold us upside down and shake all the nonsense out.” ~ Rumi
The nonsense continues to be shaken off of me and for this, I am grateful. I want to be open to this process… always.
How about you?
It’s so tempting to want to take the love back. I have been there.
“I shouldn’t have been so nice”
“I wasted so much time”
“I wish I’d never met them”
And yet, if we are honest, like I am striving to be with myself, we will realize that what we gained by loving is precious and everlasting. We learned what love wasn’t – isn’t.
These lessons can help us get back to love, and therefore, back to the energy of creation, so we can live our purpose and live up to our fullest potential.
“Love is not an emotion, it’s your very existence.” ~ Rumi
You are love. I am love. We are love.
As we become more of what we came to be, we embody love.
Love is not that which we do or don’t do, it’s who we are. And to return to love, we must unlearn so much of what has been told and taught. We must connect with our Divine Source and be willing to be like a baby – open, curious, humble, submissive, loving.
“Love risks everything and asks for nothing.” ~ Rumi
This Rumi quote is similar to the definition of love we read in 1 Corinthians 13 in the Bible – this is a letter from Paul, an Apostle of Jesus, to the people of Corinth.
He says:
Charity suffereth long, and is kind; … (verse 4)
Doth not …seeketh not her own… (verse 5)
Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things...(verse 7)
Love is a giver, a sharer, a contributor… and we can be that too.
Sometimes we do not think we have much to give, especially in the dark moments of our lives. However, we can often do something and we can always be something to someone else.
How will you risk for love?
Who do you choose to be?
Knowing that love is something that can flow naturally out of you can help you pour it out to those around you – and it will effortlessly come back to you.
“This is love: to fly toward a secret sky, to cause a hundred veils to fall each moment. First to let go of life. Finally, to take a step without feet.” ~ Rumi
Rumi was such a wise poet and his words so beautiful and piercing. Love is like a superpower that can make the impossible happen.
I experienced these feelings in the afterlife during my near death experience. I am not afraid of dying because I know there is only love, peace, and beauty beyond the veil. This means that love truly never ends – it always was and it always will be. That’s why we have learned that God is love.
“On the path of love, we are neither masters nor the owners of our lives. We are only a brush in the hand of the master painter.” ~ Rumi
We are all learning on this path to love, so staying open is required. Humility is a great virtue that gets us closer to love.
But in pictures, each stroke matters. It’s meaningful to the ultimate masterpiece. The masterful painter fearfully, and wonderfully paints each stroke with love and care.
We all make up the painting of life and we are each needed to make it both beautiful and meaningful.
“Whatever happens, just keep smiling and lose yourself in love.” ~ Rumi
Did you know that smiling can shift your attitude?
Someone once pointed out that I smile through everything as if it was bad… but this Rumi quote liberated me from that misjudgment.
Like our friend Buddy the Elf would say: “Smiling’s my favorite!”
Of course, we want to genuinely smile, not put on a smiling mask to appear a certain way to others so they like and approve of us.
The smile poet Rumi is talking about is the one that comes out from our soul when we lose ourselves in love – when we lose our ego in love and find the true Self.
Think of someone who makes you smile and smile so big that all your teeth show. What a great feeling!
“This is a subtle truth. Whatever you love, you are.” ~ Rumi
This Rumi quote can be a bit of a puzzle or a big ouch. If we are what we love and we must love everyone and everything, then we are really one.
Who do you love? What do you love? LOVE is your identity.
“Every moment is made glorious by the light of love.” ~ Rumi
This can be a powerful affirmation for when things are not going as planned or expected, which is ofen, right?
I’m sure we can think as moments when that we believe couldn’t be made glorious, but I guess it’s at least worth a try!
The truth is, every moment is adding to our evolution. We’ve all experienced childbirth, whether as a mom or a child, and it was painful for both – and yet – such a glorious miracle. It’s how life begins and how life unfolds.
“Come out of the circle of time and into the circle of love.” ~ Rumi
Before I came across this Rumi quote, I didn’t think time and love were competitors. But reading this quote helped me remember that how I invest my time is a choice and that I want to choose love.
The concept of time is so different from a Divine perspective. It is a timeless experience where everything is love.
“For those who love with heart and soul, there is no such thing as separation.” ~ Rumi
Breakup, distance, death… It all means separation in this realm we call Earth. And yet, I have experienced, by contrast, that these events can actually unite us, if we look with the right perspective.
Separation is an illusion because we are truly united by one Force, all throuhout eternity. As we look to our heart and our soul for the truth of who we are, we will cement this inner knowing in the core of our being.
“Whenever we manage to love without expectations, calculations, or negotiations, we are indeed in heaven.” ~ Rumi
Expectations, calculations, and negotiations are love killers. When you commit to explore these 3 areas, life can be heaven.
Think of each of these and reflect – what is its opposite?
To me, it’s possibility, intuition, yielding. It’s freedom.
I believe that as we expect, calculate, and negotiate less, we will enjoy more freedom, just like there is in Heaven.
“The way you make love is the way God will be with you.” ~ Rumi
There are universal laws that govern our life results. These laws dictate that we will be judged as we judge, forgiven as we forgive, and loved as we love.
It is often called The Golden Rule – It is so. Because we are one, you can’t help but treat yourself the way you treat others. And because God is in each of us, the way we treat each other is the way we treat God.
Perhaps this Bible verse might sound familiar:
“…Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” (Matthew 25:40).
It is a very clear teaching that we sometimes miss and we can find it across all spiritual disciplines.
“Love is the whole thing. We are only pieces.” ~ Rumi
Like in a puzzle, the whole thing needs each and every one of us. It’s not just that you are love and I am love, we are actually all love together.
And have you noticed that when we look at a 5000-piece puzzle that is missing just one piece, our gaze goes toward the missing piece and it’s like the beauty of the other pieces disappears?
It never did make sense for me reading in the Bible how leaving behind the herd of 99 and seeking “the missing sheep” was loving, but it is our nature to focus on what or who is missing. Because each of us matters.
In the puzzle of life, think of one figurative lost piece who needs love. What can you do to pour love so it can be found?
“If you want to be more alive, love is the truest health.” ~ Rumi
Fear, hatred, and resentment all cause distress and disease. More than ever, we know about the mind-body connection and how trauma is stored in our bodies.
Trauma has three main definitions:
1- A disturbing or distressing experience
2- A physical injury
3- The emotional effect of either a physical injury or distressing event or experience
Had you considered this before?
Love is a balm for the spirit, the mind, and the body, and the more, the better. Love is the only antidote for trauma – and trauma is disease.
As we heal, we will be more alive. We can truly enjoy every area of our lives and be free.
“You have to keep breaking your heart until it opens.” ~ Rumi
I see this quote as a great reminder for times when we have a broken heart by others, and it’s also sending us a message that we need to do it ourselves. How so?
Fun fact: If I’m honest, each heartbreak has truly helped me become more loving, compassionate, and considerate of myself and others. I say “more,” not “completely,” which is why Rumi talks about this process as an ongoing one.
Now, how do I break my own heart? What Rumi means here is that every time we open our hearts, it is a risk of heartbreak, and yet, an open heart is our goal.
This is not only about romantic relationships or intimate connections. This is true of any attempt to relate to others – family, friends, and every vulnerable interaction we allow ourselves to have.
“I am in you and I am you. No one can understand this until he has lost his mind.” ~ Rumi
This teaches us that when we look at people with our heart, we can see nothing but ourselves. It’s all a projection!
When we are willing to lose our minds, then we can realize that we are one. Our souls are connected to God and each other. And this beautiful truth is what heals, saves, and creates a Heaven on Earth.
When we love something about others, it’s because we love it in ourselves. When we hate or are bothered by something about others, it’s because we hate or are bothered by it in ourselves.
This awareness alone can help us all evolve into a consciousness of love.
What other Rumi Quotes about LOVE can you share?
These Rumi quotes give us so much to think about!
Jesus said that LOVE is the sign that someone is a student of His work and a follower of His word. He taught that we must love even our enemies. We are all one and when we love our enemies, we are simply loving ourselves – and then there are no enemies within.
So today, my prayer is that each day, I can consciously access the Divine Love inside me and allow it to flow as an expression that is palpable to myself and all around me. That is my prayer for you, as well. May love be our guiding light, today and always.

Your quote about the barriers to love IS NOT RUMI's.This is a common mis-attribution to Rumi whichhas been amplified across the internet.. It is from A Course in Miracles in Chapter 16 Section 4 paragraph 6. Here is the whole paragraph; "Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all of the barriers within yourself that you have built against it. Yet peace will never come from the illusion of love, but only from its reality. I hope you will correctly attribute the quote to ACIM

When Rumi says that "love is the bridge", he's not talking about navigation through life (as the author is proposing). He is saying that the sense of "connectedness" with all of life, all manifestation......this sense of connectedness that we all desire, becomes present in our hearts to the degree that the heart is filled with love. This sense of connectedness applies not only to the things of this material realm, but also a sense of connection to God. The key to God realization is the presence of love in the heart......because God desires to receive our love. We have been created only for this purpose.

“Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.”
~Rumi.
All you need is already within you, only you must approach your self with reverence and love. Self-condemnation and self-distrust are grievous errors. Your constant flight from pain and search for pleasure is a sign of love you bear for your self, all I plead with you is this: make love of your self perfect. Deny yourself nothing -- glue your self infinity and eternity and discover that you do not need them; you are beyond.
