Take A Look At Yourself

When I was a little girl, I dreamed about being an accomplished choreographer.

I loved Michael Jackson. So much to learn. Dancing like that was just surreal.

The dance steps and the rhythm led me to want to learn the lyrics. As I learned English, I was inspired by so many of his songs.

the Woman in the mirror - MOMtivation, the positive mom blog

The first song I ever learned all the lyrics to taught me about making a difference in the world…making it right. Wow, that sounded incredible!

I’m Gonna Make A Change,
For Once In My Life
It’s Gonna Feel Real Good,
Gonna Make A Difference
Gonna Make It Right . . .

Really empowering for a tiny dancer little Dominican girl 🙂 What really hit me though, was “starting with the man in the mirror“, the woman in the mirror, the child in the mirror, you in the mirror.

If You Wanna Make The World A Better Place
Take A Look At Yourself, And Then Make A Change.

This was a valuable lesson and one I reflect upon a lot. I usually look for messages in things l love: music, nature, my own children. The messages usually prompt me to do the same thing: make a change!

It’s hard to admit we need to change. And let’s face it, change is not easy to digest either, even if we think and even firmly believe it’s necessary.

Change brings change… If we want things to be better, we must be better!

Sometimes we need to experience painful situations in our lives to know that familiar and stable doesn’t mean wonderful and conducive to happiness. I can tell a story or two, or five…

We settle for the familiar situation because it’s what we know and it only gets worse because we wouldn’t change.

We wanted to change to happen, but we wanted it to come from somewhere or someone else. Maybe our boss needed to change, our spouse, our friend, our neighbor, NOT us. In those moments of denial, I remember “if it’s to be, it’s up to me.”

Change starts within. I have learned that sometimes we need to do things first and to do things more. If I want someone to tell me they love me, I tell them I love them and I tell them how important it is that they love me back.

If I want a hug, I ask for it, sometimes, I just hug! This has changed my life…because I changed. I took a look at myself and made that change.

I know I have to make so many more chances, but a journey of a thousand miles starts with one step…with one look in the mirror.

If you are doing your best, don’t beat yourself up. When you take a look at yourself, make the change you can do. It may seem small or insignificant, but you will start to see how your world will be a better place and so will the world around you, for all of us to enjoy!
