Win Tickets To See The Boy Friend Musical At The Firehouse Theatre

Giveaway disclosure

I normally celebrate Valentine’s Day by staying at home, watching a romantic movie in my comfy clothes, and maybe even sipping on some herbal tea, but this year was quite different.

I put on an adorable dress, super high heels, and went to see The Boy Friend musical at Firehouse Theatre for a media preview night.

The Boy Friend runs through March 3rd and I encourage you to reserve your seats soon, and also to enter for a chance to win a chance to see The Boy Friend musical at Firehouse Theatre in Farmers Branch, Texas.

This was our second time my daughters and I get to see a Firehouse Theater production. Our first was Mary Poppins and it was delightful! The Firehouse Theatre is an award-winning theatre company performed in historic Firehouse #1, which produces eight mainstage shows each year, as well as three Firehouse JR. productions.

The Boy Friend is a light romantic spoof of 1920s musical comedies, written in the 50’s, and set in the French Riviera.

With book, music, and lyrics by Sandy Wilson, The Boy Friend is guaranteed to give you a good time (or a good date – ahem!).

Unfortunately and ironically, “my date” stood me up for The Boy Friend and on Valentine’s Day, but even in that case I had the most amazing time! I laughed so hard with and my daughters and I all agreed that The Boy Friend is a new favorite.

We were really happy that my daughter’s best friend / special friend was able to join us – and it was his first musical, which is a bit insane, but also extra meaningful.

Don’t they look adorable?

The Boy Friend tells the story of English heiress, Polly Browne, who longs for one thing she doesn’t have: a boy friend. Polly’s father, millionaire Percival Browne, has instilled in her the fear that any boy who isn’t wealthy will court Polly strictly because he’s after her fortune, and forbids her to date.

Fun Fact: Julie Andrews became a star after her incomparable performance as Polly, in her Broadway debut in September 1954, the day after she turned 19 years old.

The show opens in the Villa Caprice, Madame Dubonnet’s Finishing School for Young Ladies, as Hortense, a chic French maid you will fall in love with, orders a costume for Polly.

Polly Browne tells the other girls (Maisie, Dulcie, Nancy, and Fay) about her made-up boy friend who is coming from Paris to be her plus one at the carnival ball, because she feels left out!

When Tony Brockhurst, a kind, romantic, and handsome messenger boy, arrives to deliver Polly’s Pierrette costume, they instantly fall in love, so Polly tells him she is a secretary to assure he’s not after her father’s money. Tony and Polly decide to go to the ball together!

But it couldn’t be that easy! There is both sweetness and sorrow that follow mistaken identities and misunderstandings that prevent the young lovers of pursuing their love.

The Boy Friend musical comedy is filled with wit, nostalgia, cheery and catchy tunes, and splendid choreography that includes tap and Charleston!

My favorite song was “Safety In Numbers,” performed by the vibrant and flirtatious Maisie and the boys – the dancing was superb!

The set design and old-fashioned costumes were simple and genius.

Lady Brockhurst is hilarious as she mourns her estranged son and heir and strives to keep a tight leash on her husband.

Lord Brockhurst is a ridiculous type of creepy old man, especially in the song It’s Never Too Late To Fall In Love, which he performs with Dulcie. He tries to woo every woman he sees, the younger the better!

But don’t worry though, the G-rated comedy set in the South of France is suitable for all ages and ran for over 2,000 performances starting with its 1954 debut, making it briefly the third-longest running musical in West End or Broadway history.

Another stellar couple is the caring Headmistress Madame Dubonnet and pompous widowed gentleman Percy Browne, who rekindle their old romance when he comes to visit his daughter Polly at the school.

The boys were stupendous! My favorite character was the adorable. dapper, and wealthy “American boy,” Bobby Van Husen. What a brilliant performance.

With romantic songs, kisses, and proposals, a Pierrette and a Pierrot, The Boy Friend musical at Firehouse Theatre makes for a date night or girls’ night.

And speaking of songs, here’s a list of the songs featured in The Boy Friend:

  • Perfect Young Ladies (Girls)
  • The Boy Friend (Polly, Dulcie, Maisie, Fay, & Nancy)
  • Won’t You Charleston With Me? (Maisie & Bobby)
  • Fancy Forgetting (Percival & Mme Dubonnet)
  • I Could Be Happy With You (Polly & Tony)
  • Sur La Plage (Boys & Girls)
  • Room In Bloomsbury, A (Polly & Tony)
  • It’s Nicer In Nice (Hortense, Boys & Girls)
  • You-Don’t-Don’t-Want-To-Play-With-Me Blues (Mme Dubonnet)
  • Safety In Numbers (Maisie & Boys)
  • Riviera, The (Company)
  • Carnival Tango
  • Poor Little Pierrette (Mme. Dubonnet)

Every song was beautifully performed and expertly orchestrated. The conductor was a joy to watch, too!

What makes The Firehouse Theatre production of The Boy Friend most impressive and enjoyable is the clever improv and surprising tongue in cheek moments.
